In addressing the needs of the stylist who cuts multicultural hair, we wanted to create shears that could cut very thick, coarse, curly hair. We knew if they could tackle this hair, they could handle all the other hair types.

To give strength for coarse, thick hair we made our blades of top stainless steel with the heavy metal molybdenum as an alloy. Then we heat treated it to a high Rockwell hardness.

In 1996, Bonnie Megowan, the owner and founder of Bonika Shears worked as the scissor sharpener in the hair salon in the Olympic Village in Atlanta, Georgia. Four teams of stylists rotated 15 hour shifts cutting hair of athletes from every country in the world. Every hair texture and type was represented. Based on the knowledge gained in the Olympic Village, the Bonika International Shear was created. These problems must not be related to abuse, misuse or poor sharpening of the shears. Your shears will be repaired or replaced at the discretion of Bonika Shears.

How do you decide which shear to buy? These 3 personalities of cutting will help you select the correct shear for your basic style cutting.

Before you begin, first, measure your thumb length from the crease to the tip and add this to the length of your middle finger. This will give you the ideal length for your shears.

Gorilla Cutter
You hold your shears with a tight grip in a thumb up position. The back of your hand is facing your client and the palm is toward you. You probably tend to feel tension in your shoulders and hands. You also have one or more of these characteristics:

You push your fingers far into the finger holes.
You may be a lefty who cuts with right handed shears.
Your hand strength is unusually strong.
You often cut through thick layers of very coarse hair.

Choose a cast shear with an even handle such as Bonika Silk A Models 5", 5.5", or 6".

Smaller hands like the Silk A5. Larger hands like the Bonika Momma.

Or choose a Bonika Twister which will force you to cut with a more relaxed hand even in a thumb-up position Twister Models.

Your hand strength is unusually strong.
You often cut through thick layers of very coarse hair.

Choose a shear with extra strong steel and an offset handle especially if you cut a lot of curly, coarse or dry hair; choose the one with the Bonika Tip such as Bonika International Models.

Eagle Cutter
You hold your shears in a light, relaxed, thumb down grip cutting more by moving your thumb rather than with your whole hand. You may also have one or more of these characteristics:

You tend to slide cut and texturize a lot.
You find you can't understand how other stylists can tolerate the condition of their shears.
You like to collect a lot of shears and feel comfortable switching shears.
You may be a platform artist or an educational instructor.
If you are left-handed you use true left-handed shears.
